I miss those women of London and thankfully, my present assignment brings me back to them on a permanent basis.  If you recall, Christmas of 2005 I was in London and wrote about the most curious, perplexing, yet liberating virtue women of London had.  Being a housewife for many years, it was a very different way of thinking.  They loved themselves first.  They took care of themselves, spent money on themselves, and from that stand point, were able to care for loved ones better.  They would not understand giving up their career and income to be a haggard wife and "hope" their partner did not forget Valentines, dote on them and always "be there."

SPELL IT OUT.....valentine....vintage scrabble magnetsWomen of London dote on themselves, take care of themselves, and buy their own gifts. This is hardly selfish--and they do not tend to lull around with broken hearts either.    So love yourself, put your self first and it will help you be a better person to those you love.  Even go on Etsy and find a hand made bauble to give as a gift to another or to yourself or a close girl friend! (Photos courtesy of Etsy.)

This Valentines, send yourself a love letter!  Buy chocolate you actually like and go do something you always wanted to do--but never felt you had time.

Love Yourself!  Increase Your Income!

New Years Eve we announced we were working on a "secret" project that was and will stay, VERY lucrative.  The response was overwhelming and we got a 50% join ratio.  That is unheard of in marketing.  Two to five percent is considered excellent.  I could not just say what it was--because I do have countless people read my material only to do "their own thing" with my ideas.  So, we did screen each and every person who wrote in.  We work as a team and no man is an island.  Many who joined us have existing bath and body projects which is fine.  We all really learn marketing together no matter what we are doing--it applies and we have a total blast.  Each person offers unique skills to the group.  So, basically, a few products I invented are selling off the walls and we need Reps around the globe.  Right now, mainly Canada, Hawaii, (We did get an Alaska Rep) and the UK.  Some are working very part time and some full time.  We are all fairly Christian based, FYI, (hardly perfect at that) but we are not into atheists.  Ground floor op is not the word, because I have always had a base at the touch if my fingers if I believed in something.   For years, I did not. Making candles is "OK" and "fun" but not real money for me to retire on, or anyone else I know, and activities like that.

This is our second and last "Draft" and we will call this our February draft.  If you are interested, do write.  Otherwise do not complain that money is tight and you have no options.  What was the saying?  "I handed you a paddle...and then I handed you a life vest.  You did not grab either..."  That is how I feel about this gift to help others.  I had a vivid dream about three years back and did not understand it then. I understand it perfectly now, and what I am supposed to be doing.   click here to e-mail me. I will respond and hook you up with some of our reps (former Mabel customers that joined my project) and they will change your life!  Do tell me what city and state you live, if you do not, I will delete your e-mail and not respond.

Those who never got a reply--your e-mail bounced when we tried...I saw some cool people too--like in DE and TN!If you get no response, e-mail a number and we will just call you..:)

Again have a lovely 2008!

Sending our Love to the Oglala Lakota Indian Children

Roseanne Barr has many charities, and we know many kids are hurting out there.  This month we picked the Indian kids up north who are simply cold and do not have adequate clothes or what we would consider typical support.  Mabel White is donating goods and money the whole month of February 2008 to this cause-we pray you join us.

Cangleska, Inc. operates two shelters for women and their children, Lulyahan Oti in the heart of the Pine Ridge Reservation and Ohitika Najin Win Oti in Rapid City, the closest urban area.  Cangleska's first shelter was established in Kyle on the Pine Ridge Reservation more than a decade ago.

Ohitika was opened seven years ago in Rapid City to serve the needs of urban Native women and children. The Rapid City shelter is running out of space and Cangleska, Inc. has launched a fund-raising campaign to build a larger Rapid City area shelter.  Click here to donate to their site with Pay Pal - Click here to let Roseanne know you helped out, she will write you back!

A Eulogy to Chanel #22 - and a Rebirth

A well orchestrated perfume can be an experience, and an arrangement of the proper notes, a symphony of the highest order.   As far as I can remember, Chanel #22 has been my only choice of perfume as nothing could compare.  Austere, analytical, powerful, yet highly feminine and devastatingly sensual was my beloved Chanel #22.   Created in 1992, in France, Chanel #22 has indolic jasmine, Neroli (sweet orange blossom,) with the New England memories of lilac and the sultry sweetness of rose as the top notes. The dry down is sophisticated, yet simple paring of sandalwood, incense, vetivert, vanilla. The heart is Ylang Ylang and Orchid.

I never tired of the scent.  My kids used to borrow my pillows in college because, they said, "it smelled like Mom..."  What they smelled was Chanel #22.  Last year there were rumors Chanel #22 was being discontinued and I almost believed them.  By December 2007, it was true--and I had to really duke it out against other bidders on eBay for what was left of it.  Not into fighting against other women who also shared my passion-I worked on formulation with perfumer friends of mine.  I made a perfect copy, but now I see why it was discontinued.  Neroli, the most heavenly component of #22, became too outrageous in price.  Neroli is around $152 an ounce even at a wholesale level.  They say it is because the orange blossom scent fades quickly after collection and the blossoms and must be distilled as soon as they are taken from the trees.  So my Chanel #22 is still alive - as long as I formulate it in my lab. I will call this "Software" by Mabel.  Software was a scent I created years ago--close to this, but reformulated to be officially from all white petals.  (The photo on the right is my lab.)

During the last major holidays crises sympathizers I had dinner with tried to hand me their Chanel #5. Although Chanel #5 does have many of the same components of #22, the same with #19,  they all have true pivotal components where they depart.  Chanel #5 is the scent of red roses and not Neroli.  If you walk into a floral shop full of red roses, you would know.  All through the holidays of 2007, my dinner friends were sure I was wearing #22, and I was wearing my copy.  That was a neat compliment.

The Journey

I decided to just take a day off and go to a perfume store.  I grabbed a hundred sample papers and sprayed every scent I could possibly like and made sure to write on each sample paper what the scent was.  Then I took my dog to the dog park for the rest of the day.  While Ringo ran around enthralled in every scent he could enjoy, I sat on a bench and smelled every paper sample I had.  I made sure not to look at the name.  I had fun sitting there doing this mindless task.  It was important future work in progress.  Could I find another life time scent?    I started creating piles of "No Way" and "Not really..."  and after all of that--I had three.

I took those three home with my happy dog who was drunk with scents of other dogs.  I debated on these three and even asked every guest who came by that week.  The winners were....in this order...Chanel Allure, Estee Lauder Pleasures, and if they ever leave the planet, Miss Dior.  So, I am buying Allure up on eBay from people who did not want it as a Christmas gift.  You can get them 1/4 the price after XMas-- with the bows still on and all!  For fun I will visit a Victoria Secrets, I know they have some brilliant blends and I will see if they feel "classic."

Fragrance is a journey and I recommend we all "get out" and have a "do nothing" day.  Despite all the tons of demands--make time to do zip.  I also highly recommend Dog parks for those with pooches.  It is a wholesome activity for you and your pet.  Music is another experience and journey.  Perhaps make a day to go out and listen to new music you may love.  The music stores have really neat earphones and ways to let you sample music these days.  I am still happy bouncing around as I work to Neil Diamond.  His music was created with so much energy, spiritualism and grace.

To Thine Own Self Be True -- William Shakespeare

Yet here, Laertes! Aboard, aboard for shame!
The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
And you are stay'd for.
There ... my blessing with thee!
And these few precepts in thy memory
Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg’d comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel but, being in,
Bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man;
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are of a most select and generous chief in that.
Neither a borrower, nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!

	-- William Shakespeare

The Working Class Diet - The Diet that Works!  A hybrid of the Low Carb Diet

Forget the Bread, Rice, Pasta and Cookies

Called the "Working Class" or "Blue Collar Diet" because people can afford it more than attempts in previous years--I have lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks, with going broke or starving.  Former high protein products were usually only affordable to the rich. Roseanne Barr, the multiple Emmy Award winning actress/comedian is basically on the same  plan. My customers tell me they barely recognize her!  She really did a metamorphosis, showing us we can be "hot" after age 40!  She has spent her life being a spokesperson for the working class, so another reason for the name of this diet plan. Maybe we will call it the "Domestic Goddess Diet," but I have to ask her.  Anyways...

Since arguing with my doctor on January 10th, 2008 that his scale could not possibly be right, (it was right,) I have lost 23 pounds and counting!  I left his office “broken” and in a complete trance to drop the weight and reclaim my mobility and life.  I had size ten clothes waiting for me, I had not worn in two years, and was pushing size 16 (that means size 20 in my language,) was avoiding social functions or anything that had to do with appearances, and still on $7 a day Nexium for gastric issues. In stark contrast my career Spring 2008 depends on visibility in TV, the public, and being healthy.  I made no progress since autumn 2007 with my weight goals as I thought I had.

After this Dr. visit everything changed and I got serious.  I went to a low carb diet that worked for me in the past—(the only diet that ever did work for me in the past) with a few educated changes.  After just four days on this regimen bloating disappeared, cravings vanished, and the sugar freak I am I could have cared less about a “bon bon.”  Totally liberating!  I am sure it is all a vicious commercial cycle, sugar your brains out and then need pricey acid reducers to maintain that albatross of a life style.  The cost of this switch is not as drastic as it was years ago.  I am also off Nexium, BTW, four weeks on this plan.  I no longer have any gastric distress is why.  So, this alone saves me $7 a day.   Bye bye Nexium, oh Nexi-YUM, oh Mexi-Yum, oh NexiTum...

The Best Diet Shakes

What saved me this time?  Accolades to Slim Fast who came up with truly the most creamy and satisfying LOW CARB shake, available in Creamy Vanilla and Creamy Chocolate.  Most shakes taste like “diet” material and I doubt I could have succeed at age 45 without these two new products.  Balanced with vitamins and minerals, I drink about four of them a day.  Coffee was the first thing to go-last year--for many valid reasons.  If I crave a “Cappuccino” or “Latte” I just use Postum (the coffee tasting grain) to flavor a hot vanilla (low carb) Slim Fast shake and serve it in a big coffee cup.  I can even add whipped cream and cinnamon if so choose.  Get out your artillery and keep it fun!  This should not cost a lot more than your portion of groceries each week.

The Atkins shakes are more expensive (yes he died and left her boss) and they do not taste as good.  Still, they are second tasty to any other brand.  I buy Strawberry Supreme for variety and Vanilla Atkins shakes if I simply cannot find the Vanilla Slim Fast in low carb.  If I am jonesing, I will make what tastes like a banana split—mixing equal parts vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.  Walden Farms also makes a great 0 carb caramel sauce and strawberry syrup—buy them if you can find them.  I throw the caramel in my lattes.  Beyond the drinks I find are “comfort foods” I also learned to love the Atkins Advantage peanut butter bars.  I buy a box of 20 a week, the have like 3 grams of carbs.  I also consider them comfort foods—and they are good. So, I am re-programming myself as to what is a “comfort” food and relax and visualize good stuff when I eat them.  Meaning I take time out and enjoy the comfort food and then go back to my project(s).  Beyond these shakes, Lemonade sweetened with stevia is always on hand, and a GREAT alkalizer for the stomach.  So these are the main drinks.  Always stay in good supply and this will work. It is when you run out—cheap processed foods can be a land mine.  Prepare for war!

Meal Variety is Key

Hard foods, you should know the typical.  Avoid starch and sugar as completely as possible.  Eat lots of broiled fish & chicken.  I broil fish 3 minutes on each side—high broil and 2 extra minutes to brown a cheese on it, or have marinated it.  You can have them pesto, blackened, Thai, Greek, cordon blue, or with a cheese cream sauce.  Variety is the key not to get bored.  Onions, peppers, diced, spliced, get creative!  And lots of salad.   Egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad are all great on top of greens.  Sautéed spinach and feta cheese are offered with most of my evening meals now.  I have even learned to make better “sauces” with my magic bullet, putting some shrimp, crab or lobster pieces from the night before in chicken broth and blending into a new cream sauce for my chicken or fish.  I use pork rinds to top some soups, or to just munch on at night instead of popcorn.   Mornings I am usually excited about dinner and I will take time out to prepare parts of dinner. I know by night I am too tired to be Iron Chef.

Restaurants

I usually opt for any Restaurant serving fajitas.  Most of the ingredients are perfectly fine, and quite tasty too!  I always ask for water with lots of extra lemons and make my own lemonade.  In that case I will use the blue packets of pretend sugar.  Again, lemon keeps acid down to almost nothing.

Yes, Sweet Potato Pancakes!

I admit by week six I was crossed eyed and not thinking too clearly.  A friend flew in from London who practices herbal medicine.  She explained I must have "some" carbs to think clearly and doing so will also help burn fat.  "You need some carbs to burn fat." She announced to my glee.  Then she dragged me to the grocery store and picked out a "Sweet Potato Pan Cake" mix by BRUCE in the baking section.  Easy to make, they were AWESOME and tasted like Pumpkin Pancakes. And I was allowed some maple sugar on top.  Eating these every other morning, or a sweet potato muffin recipe, on the bag. (with some bran thrown in) I am losing TWO pounds a day, and not so cranky as I was getting.  So, I have these every other day and scrambled eggs with cheese on the alternate days.  Breakfast is a really critical period also, as she taught me.

Where to buy? The particular low carb cans are not always easy to find.  I have been ALL OVER and Sam’s Club seems to have the Slim Fast Low Carb Creamy Chocolate shake for $1.45 a can, and Wal-Mart seems to have the Slim Fast creamy Vanilla Low Carb shakes for $1.55. Grocery stores, if they have them, tend to want almost $2 a can.  As far as vegetables and fish, aim for markets that specialize in vegetables, fish or chicken.  It also helps make this a “special” time for you.

Summary: Prepare for war and stock up on all the things you can eat. Find ways to make the foods you can eat look and appear creative.  Take time out to enjoy the snacks you can eat and associate them with comfort.  Have a strategy ready for restaurants, and people who are not on the diet.   Consider those not on the diet the enemy and be prepared to “feel for them.”  Go on line and gawk at clothes you will soon fit in!
