Special report Bed Bugs: Trick or Treat?

A Healthy Flu Preventive Syrup  submitted by Kari Pastor

In response to our Master Flu Tonic Recipe located in the middle of this newsletter, Kari Pastor a reader in Nevada sent us this recipe below to try.  Kari is the few who have run circles around my own formulas and has enough kids to document her experiments and findings.  I adore hearing any concoction from her.  This recipe also makes sense and looks great.  I will name her recipe after her!

Syrup d'Pastor

"Hya! I don't know if you want to use it or not, but I been making this batch like crazy for about 3 weeks here...take a whole white onion, slice into rings, add some fresh chopped garlic, add some cinnamon, red pepper flakes, and a bit of oregano.  Put it all to a pot, and dump a container of honey to cover it all.   I then put it on lowest setting and occasionally sort of mash it/mix it -- you will see the onion and garlic sort of slowly shrink in the honey. after a few hours, strain it and put in a jar to keep in the fridge. This makes the best cough syrup, and I use it on the whole family, as much as they let me shove it in their mouth-about 2 tablespoons each time also add to herbal tea, and towards the end, I dump leftovers over chicken or pork and bake it in the oven.  The other thing I do is take vodka, and add lavender, eucalyptus, and white camphor, and spray it all over the house and bedding and kitchen/bathroom surfaces."  Kari Pastor

UK uses vegetable glycerin as syrup so if you do not like honey this could be fine as a substitute.  Also, consider putting lemon in the mix, and do not rule out menthol crystals.  Menthol crystals are way potent so be careful.  If you are a real masochist put more pepper in.  ~Deborah

Make Your Own Canned Pumpkin for Autumn 2009 and Freeze it

Since canned pumpkin is scarce this year, go ahead and make your own canned pumpkin for your family enjoyment.  Making your own canned pumpkin from a real pumpkin is flat easy and now is the best time to do it.  You would be freezing it since FDA does not recommend canning pumpkin per se. You will have enough left over to give as gifts to your friends.  Give gifts such as canned pumpkin a good week to ten days before the holiday so the recipient knows its coming.   The main difference between canned pumpkin and home made pumpkin pie filling is canned pumpkin has far less water content.  To mimic that attribute we bake ours first and then scrape the pumpkin flesh out.   Placing some water in the bake pan will also help steam the skin off.

One eight pound pumpkin can make beaucoup canned pumpkin!

While you are at it, you can make and jar cran-raspberry jell too.

The type of pumpkin does matter, select one that has good orange coloring and is heavy for its size. It should be firm, free of blemishes and have its stem intact.  Try not to select the Jack-O-Lantern variety if possible.  That variety is not as sweet and tends to be tough and stringy. If Jack-O-Lantern is all you have then add 25% more sugar and puree twice a long in a food processor.  A medium pumpkin makes about four cups of pumpkin puree.  A large pumpkin can make 6-8 cups of pumpkin puree.  Pie pumpkins, if available, will offer a more stable yield-about one cup of puree per pound of pumpkin.

To make pumpkin pie filling:  Cut pumpkin up in quarters, scoop seeds out by filleting down the side of each quarter. Bake 1 hour at 325F and 2 more hours at 300F.  After turning the oven off, leave the oven door cracked open to continue to dry the pumpkin several more hours.  A little water in the pan will help steam it off.  Remove the skin and any leathery parts before puréeing well.  Strain water from puree as well as you can.  Consider ahead of time if you want to save and toast the seeds.

Pie Filling:  Since you are at the puree (food processor) stage you may as well add the spices.  If you have pumpkin pie spice you can skip the spices below and use 2 tablespoons of that.  Otherwise add the following to your food processor:

  • 2 Teaspoons each of cinnamon, cloves & allspice.
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of salt (optional)

Pour into 3 cup containers and store.  Use a marker to note it is 3 cups.

Cran Raspberry Jelly Recipe

Ocean Spray stopped making it and I really liked it.  I felt raspberry made cranberry

more interesting.  You may want to buy 6 four ounce canning jars to make extra to give as gifts.  I simply warm up 70% cranberry jelly with 30% Red Raspberry Preserves   until mixed and warm enough to pour into containers.  You could even use blueberry preserves or think of other similar variations.  The heat will pull the lid back down and form a seal.  If you plan to store them for a long period of time, make sure the mixture is very hot going in. If a mixture goes in a jar very hot, you should notice the air leave and the lid compress in after it cools.  This is a good indication it is "canned."  Old school canners may opt to just pour hot paraffin over the top to be sure it is air tight.  In that case you would wait until the wax has cooled before putting a lid on.  For several reasons I am not a fan of the old school method - it is however an option. © Deborah Dolen 2000-2011

The Beauty of Bamboo Sheets ready for another guilty pleasure?

Bamboo fiber has really become popular because it is a renewable source.  As a bonus it is naturally antibacterial and anti-microbial.  Who

would have dreamed something so healthy for the environment would be so decadent on the skin? Although silk is great for skin respiration-bamboo fiber works better. When a friend handed me bamboo sheets I am not sure what I thought they were.  Maybe I thought they had imprints of bamboo on them.  I did not open them for a good month.  When I finally did for a guest to use, I noted they felt looked like silk but felt sturdier.  I never used silk because it did tear too easily, plus it felt a little flimsy.  After I slept in bamboo fiber sheets I found them to be like glorious mercy and heaven on earth.  [Do not ask what glorious mercy actually means-I just made that up.]  It is what it "felt" like to me-and it does every night too!

So, I cannot begin to describe how comfortable they are.  Softer than silk but far stronger than silk. Kind of like sleeping on a parachute if that makes any sense. So spoiled, I will not sleep on any but bamboo fiber sheets now.    As with any sheet, the higher the thread count the better.  I see Overstock has them on sale, and on discount at many of the main department stores for under $100.  They are normally three times that. .  Since sleep is 1/3 of our life-make it the best you can.  If I had any Christmas wish it would be another set of bamboo sheets.

Look for 100% Bamboo fiber count.  There are cotton blends out there such as 40/60, but if you are going to go for the bamboo do it 100%!

Thoughts about H1N1 virus and the swine flu virus...

I know in 2004-2006 my staff was playing musical flu with just what kids brought home from school.  We began using a high proof alcohol to wipe down every point of contact.  I like Everclear [or Mohawk] 190 proof for so many reasons and this is a big one.    No one got sick again, I dare to say with anything at all.  I keep the  alcohol well marked but in decorative vinegar type bottles.  We use the high proof alcohol to wipe down handles, door knobs, sinks, shared phones and in some cases-keyboards.

We travel with it too!  A 2 ounce bottle in our purse for public areas.  The key to using alcohol is it only is effective when the area wiped down is dry.  The evaporation process is what kills any bugs.  As far as essential oils go-or foods that contain trace oils-cassia and cinnamon are high up on the list.  It may be a good idea to start enjoying cinnamon in your diet.  Taking a mixture of 1/2 Tbs of honey and 1/2 Tbs of cinnamon 5-6 times a day is another  useful home remedy and cinnamon aids digestion as well.  Re the essential oil this item is too caustic to go on the skin.  Not a bad item to have wavering through the air and a good time to get a cinnamon broom.

A few years ago I studied the H1N1 because I am a big bird lover and had many species living around me.  Back then I read preliminary findings coming out of the far east that people gathering oregano and/or basil were somehow immune to H1N1 as people around them fell ill.  Since then I found Georgetown University researchers have found something as common as oil of Oregano can reduce infection "as effectively as traditional antibiotics."  So, another point for the oregano essential oil home team!  Weber State University (Ogden, UT) found a 90% kill rate for airborne micro-organisms by using  an essential oil blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus and rosemary.  The maximum effect took 20 minutes to achieve, the minimum helpful effect took 12 minutes.  Tea Tree, Lemon and Eucalyptus I feel are most palatable to be sprayed into a central air intake, put in a diffuser or just spray into a room.

Here is an article BBC did on the subject.  The main point is one thing cannot be a panacea.  It has to be in conjunction with everything else.  So, cleaning habits, hygiene, avoidance when possible and diet all play a role.  I have received many e-mails suddenly fascinated with the four thieves blend.  This was a gang of bandits from Marseilles [the city famous for soap making]  using a concoction to wipe themselves down before the bilked black plague casualties years ago.  They did so with much success.  One King offered to not kill them if they handed over their secret formula.  They gave over their recipe and were hung shortly thereafter.  Although essential oils were in this, I feel the high acidic vinegar solution they used as their medium was part of the success.  Very few organisms can live in a highly acid environment.  Think about lemon juice.  So, I would disperse essential oils into a solvent such as alcohol, a medium that by itself works on organisms and use that for room sprays and clean downs such as counter tops.  The essential oils in the four thieves blend included Rosemary, Cloves, Sage and Camphor.  Not far different than the ones receiving attention now at the universities.  I feel the thieves would have used others such as lemon, oregano and basil if it were available to them.  These oils are showing the same kinds of protections to their handlers in the modern day H1N1.

Nostradamus lost a wife to the black plague and noticed no one in his perfumery ever was struck with the plague.  He felt rose exceptionally favorable but that has never been proven.  Scientist feel his success may have been the vitamin C found in the rose hips.

Why I love Michael Moore

I like anyone who is a free thinker and I really adore anyone despised by Pfizer, Merck and Monsanto. Passionate but peaceful about whatever they are doing.   A person not so afraid to take risks who then can never say they have "lived."  As the old saying goes, "if at first you do not succeed-destroy all evidence that you tried."  Michael Moore sure does not have to live vicariously through others.  And unlike many, Michael Moore sure can say he has lived.  I love that four eyed jelly belly.  Michael Moore is a stand up guy whether he is right or wrong.  The problem with our society is few stand up or ask questions until they saw a cliff-and that was only to run backwards.

I have not seen his new film yet "Capitalism: A Love Story" but I already love the trailers and I will go next weekend to see it.  My personal favorite Moore antic is his putting crime scene tape around the SEC building.  Michael Moore's book, "Dude Where is My Country?" is also a good read.  The photo above was the sexiest one I could find. :)

What about 2012? by Deborah Dolen

I am so glad you asked.  One night I was so very bored [and I mean face to the keyboard kind of bored] I began to worry about the world ending in 2012. I literally had nothing else to do.  Snopes could not really say it was not true and this began to agonize me and make me wonder...Could it be true?  The world is going to end?  The upside is Discover card and Capital One (they have your wallet BTW) can't call.    After reading all night here is my summary re 2012: The Mayans never wrote any calendar for us, and they would never even like us enough to do that anyway.  The Mayans were far more interested in things like eating and survival.  The Mayan calendar was all about them.  It was always about "them."  Plus any civilization that practiced human sacrifice is not a bunch of advanced geniuses anyway and need I point out they died.  In fact the Mayans died WAAAY before the end of their own calendar.   On a similar note-Nostradamus actually was not right about a lot of things and according to him we were toast in 1999 (after he conveniently is not around.)  Plus he could have heard this lore from the Mayans before his time and been tainted by it.  The best answer is this one "But of that day and that hour knoweth no man."  So ignore fear mongers who claim to know anything.  We have our plate full with things we can do something about.

Master Tonic:  A Natural Antibiotic [Our most downloaded article ever and a reprint from 2003]

It is just that time of year that the changes in our weather tend to start the cold of flu season.  Beyond "Garlic Soup for the Soul" in my Kitchen Art's book as well as free on the "Get Well Soon" Postcard (click here for that) there has been made known a master tonic that is supposed to be so strong, not only will viruses want to leave, so will those who smell your breath!  Use at your own risk!  The famous tonic is made up of the following:

  • Raw Unfiltered Unbleached Non-distilled Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 1 part fresh chopped garlic cloves

  • 1 part fresh chopped White Onion (or hottest onions)

  • 1 part fresh grated Ginger Root

  • 1 part fresh grated Horseradish Root

  • 1 part fresh chopped Cayenne Peppers

To Make:

Fill a glass jar 3/4 of the way full w/equal parts by volume (i.e. a cupful each) of the above fresh chopped and grated herbs. Then fill jar to the top with RAW, Unfiltered, unbleached, non-distilled apple cider vinegar. Close and shake vigorously and then top off the vinegar if necessary.

Shake at least once a day for two weeks, then filter the mixture through a clean piece of cotton (old T-shirt, etc.), bottle and label. Make sure that when you make this tonic that you shake it every time you walk by it, a minimum of once per day. Remember that all the herbs and vegetables should be fresh (and organically grown if possible) and use dried herbs only in an emergency.

This tonic is extremely powerful because all the ingredients are fresh. It's power should not be underestimated. This formula is a modern day plague tonic and when added to an incurable routine it can cure the most chronic conditions and stubborn diseases. It stimulates maximum blood circulation, while putting the best detoxifying herbs into the blood. This formula is not just for the sniffles, it has helped to turn around the deadliest infections like some of the new mutated killer viruses that defy conventional antibiotics.

The dosage is 1/2 to 1 ounce, two or more times daily (1-2 Tbs.). Gargle and swallow. (DON'T DILUTE with WATER.)

For ORDINARY infections, 1 dropper full taken 5-6 times a day will deal with most conditions. It can be used during pregnancies, is safe for children (use smaller doses and as a food is completely non-toxic. Make up plenty as it does NOT need refrigeration and LASTS INDEFINITELY WITHOUT ANY SPECIAL STORAGE CONDITIONS.

Ingredient properties:
-Garlic cloves (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-parasitical)
-White Onion, or hottest onions available (similar properties to garlic)
-Ginger Root (increases circulation to the extremities)
-Horseradish Root (increases blood flow to the head)
-Cayenne Peppers, or the hottest peppers available, i.e. habanero, African Bird, -or Scotch Bonnets, etc. (a great blood stimulant).

Pro-biotic: antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitical.
(Comes from The University of Natural Healing: Dr. Richard Schultzs' adaptation of Dr. Christopher's' original anti-plague tonic).  Submitted by:  Debbieway2busy@aol.com.

The Miracle of Black Cumin Oil  [Another re-print and popular download]

Black cumin oil, also known as black caraway or black seed oil is not black.  But it is highly regarded by many as a

panacea and may therefore not be taken seriously by some, but for those inclined to dismiss folklore, it should be noted that these humble seeds have been found superior to almost every other natural remedy when used for autoimmune disorders, conditions in which patients suffer greatly because their own systems attack their bodies. Black cumin, especially when combined with garlic, is regarded as a harmonizer of the imbalance which allows immune cells to destroy healthy cells. The technical language to describe this property is "immunomodulatory action." The difference between black cumin and interferon is that there are no known side effects with black cumin when administered in normal dosages. The saying goes that the beauty of black cumin is their capacity to restore harmony.

The most dramatic results are achieved with asthma and allergies. These respond relatively quickly unless there is infection, in which case, the infection needs to be eliminated before the symptoms of immune weakness subside. Continued use for six months or longer tends to give outstanding results. For extreme fatigue, consider mixing some crushed seeds with some royal jelly.

In the 13th century, the Arabic physician Ibn Kaym claimed black caraway could be used for over 50 ailments such as Bronchial Asthma, Bronchitis and other diseases of the respiratory tract. Also inflammation reduction, Arthritis relief, correction of digestive disorders, constipation relief, fighting parasitic infestations, detoxification and strengthening of the liver, increased energy and general good health are among the many benefits from using black caraway.

At the 71st annual meeting of the federation of American societies for experimental biology, a report was issued supporting some of the medicinal claims of Black Caraway. Some medicinal response may be attributed to the increase of immune enhancing T cells. This may support the black caraway’s role in balancing and strengthening the immune system. We love to use it in our facial cleansing milks.  Click here to buy cold pressed Black Cumin Seed Oil.

Myristic Acid(0.5%), Palmitic Acid (13.7%), Palmitoleic Acid (0.1%), Stearic Acid (2.6%), Oleic Acid (23.7%), Linoleic Acid [Omega-6] (57.9%), Linolenic Acid [Omega-3] (0.2%), Arachidic Acid (1.3%) - and the following nutrient components Protein, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine, Niacin, Folacin, Calcium, Iron, Copper, Zinc, Phosphorus.

Editor's note:  I find the vitamin B family, superficially Pyridoxine significant because it dos stop itching. This is also known as Vitamin B-1.  When combined with menthol I find it wonderful for various skin conditions.   I add this at 5-10% to liquid soap, body crèmes, ointments and lotions to name a few.
